With Indian Premier League (IPL) 2018 player auction nearing, the franchises and governing council are busy chopping out a way forward. IPL auction in the last few years have sprung out surprises with Indian uncapped players being purchased for plenty â T Natarajan for INR 3 Crore and KC Cariappa for INR 2.4 crore.
Now Virat Kohli and MS Dhoni have suggested the BCCI to put a salary cap for uncapped players as well. One has seen lack of motivation in domestic in playing First-Class cricket that has less money involved.
According to Indian Express, a source in BCCI said: âA classic case was Cariappa, who was bought by KKR for Rs 2.4 crore in 2015. He had played a few games in the Karnataka Premier League but hadnât played for the Karnataka Ranji side. It really sends a wrong message to all First-Class players. On one side we have some who play non-stop Ranji Trophy games and earn only 10-12 lakh in an entire season, and here comes a boy who is getting so much. Kohli and Dhoni felt it wasnât right and BCCI should keep a salary cap on these uncapped players.â
Dhoni, who plays for Jharkhand, has been quite vocal about increasing salaries of domestic players ever since. It may also be noted that many teams like Odisha, Assam and Tripura are yet to receive their fees from Ranji Trophy 2016-17 season.
