India owned the first session of Day Two of the third Test against Sri Lanka, putting up 500 for 5 before lunch. After a thumping victory in Nagpur, India opted to bat in the Delhi Test and are on the way to a massive total to mount more pressure on the visitors. Virat Kohli scored his second double-hundred in the series, while Rohit Sharma scored a half-century as both look settled and hungry for more. India lost Rohit’s wicket right before lunch, while Kohli remained unbeaten at 225.

India were 371 for 4 before stumps on the opening day, and the game had pretty much slipped away from Sri Lanka already. Kohli was unbeaten on 156 and his conversion rate was enough to say he would not settle for anything less than another double-century. He eventually got it on Sunday despite all the struggle he had to face while running for singles. Kohli, who generally seems eager to convert the singles into doubles, took no risk on Sunday. He had few niggles, once a cut on his finger and then a cramp in hamstring. However, Kohli was driven enough to ignore all of them and batter the Lankan bowlers, getting to his record-breaking double-century.

There was hardly any highlights for Sri Lanka with the ball, apart from a failed appeal to remove Kohli for 195 and Rohit’s wicket. Kohli was confident that he had edged it and reviewed it to extend his stay at the crease, while Rohit had to depart caught-behind for 65. The duo put up a 135-run partnership before Rohit’s departure.

Sri Lanka’s game plan, if there was any after the Indian batsmen had demolished their confidence with nearly flawless batting, seemed haphazard. Despite many shots being played through the gap in slips, bowlers failed to find right areas to produce chance. Fielding, too, looked unimpressive, which all, in turn, added to India’s run-fest. Lakshan Sandakan remained the most successful, with 3 for 148.

Brief scores:
