West Indies almost pulled off a tie in the third and final T20I against India in Chennai after the hosts had put themselves in a strong position for a victory. With a single needed off the final delivery, Fabian Allen failed to collect the ball cleanly off his own bowling as India scampered for a single to win the match by six wickets.
With that win, India completed a 3-0 clean sweep.
West Indies captain Carlos Brathwaite praised his team for keeping the contest alive after a century stand between Shikhar Dhawan (92) and Rishabh Pant (58) had put India in the prime position.
“We had a chat before the game and talked about every game being important. We wanted to put a smile on the fans’ face but didn’t get the result we would have liked. I will take the effort and belief, especially taking it to the last ball after Shikhar and Rishabh’s partnership,” Brathwaite said at the post-match presentation.
West Indies innings was powered by a quickfire half-century from Nicholas Pooran who made an unbeaten 53 off 25 as the tourists posted 181/3. Brathwaite said the emergence of talented youngsters will help them build up a strong team to defend their World T20 crown in 2020.
There are a few here (promising youngsters). Shai (Hope), (Shimron) Hetmyer and (Nicholas) Pooran. We need to do the right things and create a unit that can challenge for the ICC World T20 in Australia,” he said.
