In a recent video posted on his Instagram handle, former India cricketer Mohammad Kaif was heard saying: “I do not doubt in my mind that he (SKY) is a proper replacement for Rohit Sharma as a skipper. With the bat, he produced the winning hit (vs Pakistan), and the way he replied to the media, talked about the things that show he has the ability as a skipper.”

The former Indian batter also praised the current Indian captain’s big-match attitude and tactical prowess on the field. There is no clear metric to quantify media pressure and compare Rohit Sharma and Suryakumar Yadav’s performance in that regard. But when it comes to numbers as leaders, we can see who has been the stronger leader for India in T20Is.

The statistics show a very close race between the two. Surya has the slightest advantage over Rohit in terms of winning percentage. However, Sharma had captained India in major competitions and more than 50 matches. Suryakumar, on the other hand, is still in the early stages of his role.

Rohit Sharma vs Suryakumar Yadav: Efficiency and honours

So far, Suryakumar’s team has appeared more consistent. The Indian squad under him has lost one out of six matches, while Rohit’s side has lost nearly five in the same span. However, Sharma’s T20 World Cup victory as a captain stands out in this situation.

Rohit Sharma’s captaincy arc ended in the ultimate victory at the T20 World Cup in 2024. His experience gives statistical consistency that Suryakumar Yadav’s developing record cannot yet match. The headline tournament victory stands as a heavyweight example of leadership under extreme circumstances.

However, early indications from Suryakumar show that he is every bit the rightful heir Kaif describes. His unique batting technique reflects adaptable tactical thinking, while his recent media interactions suggest the maturity expected of a leader.
