There seems to be no end to Babar Azam’s struggles in international cricket as his poor run of form continues. The star batter’s last century for Pakistan came over two years ago. Expectations were high for the former Pakistan captain to deliver in the opening ODI of the three-match series at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium, given his strong record against Sri Lanka. However, after scoring just 29, the right-hander walked back to the pavilion, disappointing the supporters.
In the 24th over of the innings, Wanindu Hasaranga outwitted the 31-year-old, who lasted just 51 balls in the middle. Babar was drawn forward when the delivery landed outside off. The ball then spun sharply to beat the inside edge and strike the top of off-stump.
Babar looked visibly puzzled as the ball rattled his stumps. Sanath Jayasuriya, the coach of Sri Lanka, fist-pumped in the dugout, unable to contain his delight. Hasaranga also displayed his trademark signature celebration.
“Another wrong one. That has been his wicket-taking delivery. Look at the gap between the bat and the pad of Babar. Deceived and bowled him. Massive scalp,” said commentator Roshan Abeysinghe as he described the dismissal.
Earlier, Babar had scored 7, 11, and 27 in the three-match ODI series against South Africa, once again failing to convert starts. His last international century came against Nepal in the Asia Cup in August 2023. The former Pakistan captain hasn’t scored a hundred in any format since then.
Charith Asalanka, the captain of Sri Lanka, chose to bowl first against Pakistan in Rawalpindi after winning the toss. Due to Abrar Ahmed’s illness, the Pakistan management substituted Naseem Shah for him in the starting lineup.
Pakistan entered the match against Sri Lanka on the back of a 2-1 series win over South Africa. Shaheen Afridi’s first assignment as ODI captain came during that series against the Proteas.
Babar also recently returned to Pakistan’s T20I squad for the series against South Africa, which Salman Ali Agha’s team won.
