Suryakumar Yadav, India’s captain, exchanged a moving message with Sri Lanka’s Dunith Wellalage after the two teams Asia Cup match ended. Notably, Wellalage’s father passed away earlier this month during his team’s group stage match against Afghanistan. Sri Lanka’s head coach, Sanath Jayasuriya, delivered the heartbreaking news and was seen consoling the spinner following the match.

The video of Suryakumar’s meeting with Wellalage circulated on social media. The footage shows the Indian captain resting his hand on Wellalage’s chest while speaking with him. Wellalage listened intently and nodded in agreement with what Suryakumar was saying.

After learning of his father’s death, Wellalage returned to Colombo but rejoined the squad in the UAE a few days later. He was included in Sri Lanka’s Super 4 match against Bangladesh, but he did not take any wickets, and was subsequently dropped from the team’s next two matches in the competition.

Meanwhile, India overcame Sri Lanka in a thrilling match, the first of the tournament to be decided by a Super Over. After being invited to bat first, the Men in Blue scored the highest total of the competition so far, 202/5 in 20 overs. Abhishek Sharma was once again the team’s leading performer, with 61 runs, while Tilak Varma and Sanju Samson contributed 49 and 39, respectively.

Sri Lanka lost Kusal Mendis in the first over, but Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Perera combined for 127 runs to keep the team in the game. Nissanka went on to produce a magnificent century, slamming Indian bowlers all over the ground. Harshit Rana removed him for 107 in the penultimate over, but Dasun Shanaka’s unbeaten 22 ensured that the match ended in a tie, with the Super Over deciding the winner.

Arshdeep Singh demonstrated his skill in the Super Over, taking two wickets in five deliveries while conceding only two runs. Suryakumar Yadav then sealed India’s victory by scoring the required three runs off the first delivery, keeping their unbeaten record intact. India will now face arch-rivals Pakistan in the all-important final on September 28.
