Indian cricket team’s mysterious spinner Varun Chakravarthy revealed some details that were very shocking to believe. He opened up about his mental state after receiving threats on phone calls following his under-par performance in the 2021 T20 World Cup.

In a recent interaction, Varun had stated that he got threatened via phone, his address was tracked, and he was even followed from the airport all the way to his home.

Varun had made his name in that year’s Indian Premier League (IPL), but could not manage to do the same in the T20 World Cup, as India was eliminated at the Super 12 stage. He did not take a single wicket and now only had revealed how the pressure was too much for him. He stated that he was suffering from depression.

When opening up on that phase of his life, Varun shared some shocking details regarding how he received phone calls that were threatening him, how he got stalked at the airport and his house being tracked down as well.

The 2021 World Cup was a dark time for me. I even went into depression then. I came into the team with so much hype, and I did not even get one wicket. After that, I was not even considered for selection for three years,” he shared in a podcast with Gobinath on YouTube.

After the 2021 T20 World Cup, I got threatening calls even before landing in India. They said that if I tried to come to India, I wouldn’t be able to. They even tracked down my home and things like that. Coming from the airport, I saw people following me on a bike. But I get that the fans are very emotional,” he added.

Varun made a solid comeback in cricket, as he has now turned out to be a special spinner for the Indian team. He was also a major role in the team’s victory in the recently-concluded Champions Trophy 2025.
