Indian batting legend Sunil Gavaskar has said that West Indies’ confidence in the ICC Champions Trophy 2013 should be attributed to their victory in the ICC World T20 in 2012.

“The win in the ICC World T20 has made the Windies believe in themselves more. They have tasted the fruits of a win and how it changes people’s perception about them,” Gavaskar said, as reported by Times of India.

“…and so they are now giving it a greater shot than the last few competitions where they just made fleeting appearances,” he added.

The Dwayne Bravo-led side have started off well with a win in a low-scoring encounter against Pakistan to boost their chances of making it to the semis. A win over India will guarantee them a spot in the next round.

“The Calypso boys are looking good and showed great character in getting through low-scoring encounter against a spirited Pakistani team,” Gavaskar said.

Gavaskar also noted the change in the approach of their game when compared to that a few years ago. He went on to say, “This [approach] is a bit different from their approach a few years back when they would have succumbed to pressure and then looked to blame everybody else except themselves.”
