West Indies tour of India 2014: Kerala Cricket Association to pay entertainment taxes in wake of financial crisis in state

Kerala Cricket Association (KCA) today said it will not seek entertainment tax relaxation for the October 8 India–West Indies One-day International (ODI) match to be played at the Jawaharlal Nehru stadium here in the wake of the financial crunch being faced by the state.

A decision in this regard was taken at the organising committee meeting that took place on Thursday. “KCA will have to pay about Rs 50 lakh as entertainment tax. This burden would not be imposed on spectators and would be borne by the KCA itself,” said T C Mathew, President of the association.

Pointing that there would be no hike in ticket fares, he said KCA wanted more spectators to come to the stadium and watch the match.

Faced with a grim fund crunch, the Ommen Chandy Government on September 17 steeply increased taxes on liquor, cigarettes, water charges and fees for various services to mop up additional revenue of over Rs 2,000 crore.
