Sulieman Benn‘s five for 39 helped West Indies to finish day three of the first Test against Bangladesh at St Vincent with a lead of 302 runs. Benn’s left-arm spin shattered Bangladesh middle order and they were all out at 182. For the visitors only Mominul Haque (51) and Mushfiqur Rahim (48*) put up some resistance.
Earlier West Indies started the day at 407 for three, and were looking to score runs quickly. The double-centurion Kraigg Brathwaite departed early and hosts lost few quick wickets . However for Bangladesh, Taijul Islam took a five-wicket haul on debut and it was his bowling that restricted the West Indians to some extent. Shivnarine Chanderpaul who had played extremely slowly on Day 2, scored much more freely on day three and needed just 15 more runs to get to his century when Denesh Ramdin declared. At that time West Indies’s score was 484 for seven.
Bangladesh made the worst possible start to their innings with Tamim Iqbal falling in just the fourth over. Imrul Kayes couldn’t hang around for much longer, and he too departed leaving Bangladesh reeling at 18 for two. At Lunch they were 41 for two. In the post lunch session, West Indies took the wickets of Shamsur Rahman and Mominul Haque, who just completed his half century. The wicket of Mominul fell in the vary last ball before Tea.
After Tea hosts completely dominated the session through the spell of Benn, who cleaned up the Bangladesh tail. Debutant Jermaine Blackwood also took two wickets. For visitors captain Rahim kept fighting from one end but there were no one to support him. At the end he remained not out on 48. Bangladesh lost their last six wickets for just 77 runs in the last session of the day and failed to avoid the follow on.
