West Indies completed a clean sweep over Bangladesh in the ODI series hanks to a magnificent century from the debutant Amir Jangoo. The hosts had been restricted to 234/6 at one stage while chasing the mammoth target of 322 runs. However, 27-year-old Jangoo showed immense maturity and played an unbeaten knock of 104 from 83 deliveries, guiding the Windies to a 4-wicket win.
“It is surreal. It is an amazing feeling. A lot of hard work, finally paying off. Not sunk in yet, but it feels amazing. I just did not want to make a duck on debut,” Jangoo said.
With the century, Jangoo became the 18th player to score a century on ODI debut and only the 2nd West Indian to do so after Desmond Haynes, who scored a ton on his ODI debut against England back in 1978.
Previously, Jangoo has featured in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) for 2 different sides – Jamaica Tallawahs and Trinbago Knight Riders. He has featured in 3 seasons of the CPL, but has only managed to play on a total of 13 occasions. His stats in the league aren’t quite good either as he has only scored 149 runs and has a highest score of 30.
The 27-year-old is yet to make his T20I and Test debut for the national team, but has featured for West Indies’ U-19 team back in 2015 and has also played first-class cricket for the Trinidad and Tobago side since the year 2017. Jangoo last played for the team earlier this year in April.
Jangoo has a decent record in first-class cricket as in 35 matches, the batter scored 1909 runs and had the highest score of 218. He also has a decent average of 34.08 in the format. Jangoo has a century and 12 half-centuries under his name in first-class cricket.
The 27-year-old also enjoys a decent record in List A cricket as in 50 matches played so far, Jangoo has scored a total of 1501 runs, including 2 centuries and 9 half-centuries. If the left-hander can ckeep up this form, then he can very well go on to achieve many more impressive feats in the cricket world.
