Captain Shikha Pandey’s five-wicket haul coupled with off-spinner Tarannum Pathan’s three wickets choked India Blue’s run-chase and helped India Red to a 15-run win in the final of the Women’s Challengers Trophy on Sunday.

Set with a 184-run target, Pandey, who has played 40 ODIs and has claimed 55 wickets, ran through the India Blue top order accounting for the first three wickets. She had her opposite number Punam Raut – another India women’s regular – for just 4 in the third over. Minnu Mani and Priya Punia added just 2 and 11 respectively as India Blue were 25/3 in the eighth over. Radha Yadav joined the action and sent Tanusree Sarkar for eight.

Bharati Fulmali was the only batswoman who could resist the bowling attack. She top-scored with 69 off 97, an innings laced with eight boundaries, but with no support at the other end, Fulmani fell to Pandey after she was caught by Harleen Deol.

Pathan then accounted for the last three wickets as India Blue folded for 168 in 47.2 overs. She returned with excellent figures of five for 33 in her 10 overs, while Pathan went for 22 in her 9.2 overs.

Earlier, after being put into bat, Veda Krishnamurthy and Deol led India Red to 183. After losing their first three wickets with 47 on the board, Deol and Krishnamurthy combined to add 84 runs for the fourth wicket.

Krishnamurthy, a 48-ODI veteran, smashed five boundaries and one six in her 62-ball stay at the crease, but fell four runs short of her fifty after she was dismissed by Aditi Sharma.

Deol followed her team-mate four overs later after she was caught by Punia off Sarkar for 42. Sarkar was the pick of the India Blue bowlers with three for 22. Reemalaxmi Ekka and Aditi picked up two wickets each.

Brief scores: India Red 183 (Veda Krishnamurthy 46, Harleen Deol 42; Tanusree Sarkar 3/22) beat India Blue 168 (Bharati Fulmali 69; Shikha Pandey 5/33, Tarannum Pathan 3/22) by 15 runs
