Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) posted a total of 168 for five against Mumbai Indians (MI) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2014 on May 3 at Wankhede Stadium. Wriddhiman Saha top-scored for Punjab with an unbeaten 59 off 47 deliveries. Glenn Maxwell struck a 27-ball 45 with five fours and two sixes. The duo shared a 69-run partnership for the third-wicket. Harbhajan Singh took two wickets for 34 runs. This is Match 22 of IPL 7. Punjab captain George Bailey won the toss and elected to bat first. Punjab named an unchanged team from their previous match against Royal Challengers Bangalore on April 28. For Mumbai, seamer Jasprit Bumrah replaced Pragyan Ojha.

Cheteshwar Pujara and Virender Sehwag opened the batting for Punjab. Zaheer Khan began proceedings for Mumbai. Zaheer bowled one on the pads and Pujara flicked the ball away over square-leg for a four to get the runs flowing. Bumrah shared the new ball with Zaheer. Bumrah pitched one full and Pujara played a delightful cover drive for a four.

Sehwag then pushed one from Zaheer towards Corey Anderson at point. He misfielded, but Rohit Sharma picked up the ball and got a direct-hit at the bowler’s end and Sehwag was well short of the crease. Sehwag was run out for one from two deliveries. That did not deter Pujara, who drove a length delivery from Zaheer through extra-cover for a four.

Anderson was brought into the attack in the fourth over. He struck immediately as he dismissed Pujara for 19. Anderson angled one away and Pujara edged the ball to wicketkeeper CM Gautam. Pujara struck four fours in his innings. Maxwell was the next batsman in and got of the mark with a lofted cover drive for four. Lasith Malinga came into the attack only in the sixth over. He bowled a yorker, but Saha flicked the ball away for a four towards fine-leg.

Bumrah then bowled a no-ball in the seventh over and the free-hit was struck for a four in-between mid-off and extra-cover. Harbhajan Singh bowled one outside off-stump and Maxwell sliced the ball over cover for a four. He was not in full control of the shot. The 50 came up for Punjab in the eighth over. Malinga bowled a short delivery and Maxwell pulled the ball for the first six of the innings over deep mid-wicket.

Maxwell hit a four through cover off Harbhajan. Maxwell then danced down the track to Harbhajan and hit a six over long-on. Saha then slog-swept one from Harbhajan for his first six over deep square-leg. But Harbhajan managed to get the breakthrough as Maxwell was dismissed for 45 off 27. Maxwell came down the pitch and skied one towards long-on. Ben Dunk took the catch. Maxwell struck five fours and two sixes. The partnership between Saha and Maxwell was worth 69 runs for the third wicket.

Anderson was brought back into the attack in the 13th over. He bowled one outside off-stump and George Bailey guided it for a four through third-man. the ball beat a jogging Zaheer in the deep. Punjab got to their 100 in the 13th over. Pollard bowled one straight and Saha hit the ball behind short fine-leg for a four. Saha then advanced down the track and hit a four over the mid-off fielder. Saha then slog-swept a length delivery for a six over Anderson at deep backward square-leg.

Zaheer was then struck for two fours in the 15th over. Bailey cut a wide delivery past backward-point and Saha hit one through deep mid-wicket. Bailey was then dismissed by Harbhajan in the 16th over. Bailey handed Anderson a catch at deep square-leg for 15 runs. Saha and David Miller then guided Punjab. Saha struck a six over deep square-leg off Zaheer in the 19th over and reached his half-century. Zaheer then injured his shoulder while bowling in that over.

Pollard replaced him and bowled the final three deliveries of the over. But Miller did smash a six over long-off. Malinga bowled the 20th and final over of the innings. Miller mishit a full delivery to Dunk at long-on. In the end, Punjab finished with a total of 168 for five. Saha had struck four fours and three sixes.
