The 2017-18 edition of Big Bash League starts December 19. As the teams are on their final leg of acquisitions, Yasir Shah, the Pakistani leg-spinner, has been signed by Brisbane Heat as a replacement player. Brisbane Heat had already signed Yasir’s fellow leg-spinner Shadab Khan, who had made his international debut in March 2017. Unfortunately, Shadab will have to miss a few matches due to international commitments. Brisbane were quick to acquire Yasir as replacement.

“Having Yasir agree to join us as a replacement player means that we can plan for the series with some certainty,” said head coach Daniel Vettori on Wednesday. “Shadab Khan has been going from strength to strength for Pakistan since signing with us and there is the possibility he could be required for international duty during the BBL. Having an experienced ‘like for like’ player such as Yasir to call upon means we can hopefully have continuity with our playing plans.”

Yasir is regarded as one of the best spinners in modern day cricket. He might not be playing limited over cricket for Pakistan of late, but has an impressive economy of 6.72 in 74 T20 matches.

Yasir won’t be included in the 18-man squad as only two overseas players are allowed. Apart from Shadab, Brisbane also have Brendon McCullum in their squad. Yasir will only be included if any one of them is left out or needed to be replaced. For now, he will be allowed to train with the squad.

Brisbane Heat start their season by playing against Melbourne Stars on December 20 at The Gabba in Brisbane.
