A lot of eyebrows have been raised on Dhruv Jurel’s bating order in the ongoing T20I series against England. However, India’s assistant coach Ryan Ten Doeschate has now explained that head coach Gautam Gambhir for going with this decision. Gambhir strongly believes the importance of deep batting lineup in T20 cricket.

As per Doeschate, Gambhir’s thought process revolves around having at east eight capable batsmen, which is a principle that is not looking something that is to change in the near future.

India’s approach to maintain a left-right batting combination in the 3rd match against England attracted some criticism. The decision to send Dhruv at no. 8, after all-rounders has raised questions about team’s batting order strategy.

You could argue that we don’t want Dhruv Jurel batting at No. 8. But if you look at the blueprint of any of Gambhir’s teams since he started coaching T20 cricket, it is a big part of how he likes to set up,” Doeschate said.

Dhruv Jurel has not performed well, as he made numbers of 4 and 2 in the second and third T20I of the ongoing series, which might even cause him to get replace by Rinku Singh. However, the primary important point to be discussed is around Dhruv’s bating position at no. 8.

The decision to send him at such a low order, for just the reason to keep the left-right batting combination in the middle order, has raised a lot of questions about the team’s strategic approach without a doubt.
