Young English cricketer Adrian St John shot dead while on holiday in Trinidad

Tributes started to pour in for the 22-year old as friends and coaches were left in shock after the incident that took place on Sunday night.

A young and talented British cricketer was shot dead while he was on a holiday in Trinidad after he was robbed at gunpoint. Adrian St John, 22, was killed in Trinidad on Sunday night. A 24-year-old man had been arrested on suspicion of murder, according to local media reports. A Foreign Office spokeswoman said regarding the incident – “We are in contact with authorities following the death of a British national in Trinidad and are ready to provide consular assistance,”. Meanwhile, tributes started to pour in for St John, who worked as a recruitment consultant in London. West Indies Cricket team opener Chris Gayle who is curently in India with the RCB squad for the IPL, sent out a tweet which said – ” Such sad news to hear. My condolences to his family & friends. Adrian St John was the captain of the academy. #Sigh ”

 

St John was captain at the Chris Gayle academy which opened in 2013. He also played for Alleyn Cricket Club in south London and for his university squad at the University of Hertfordshire.

 

About the mishap, the local media reported that the armed robbery took place in Mt D’Or in the north of the island, as St John stopped his car to pick up the daughter of a female passenger. According to what was told to the Guardian – the Police said that two men robbed the passengers and then ordered St John to drive off but fired a gun after the car, hitting the British man. Meanwhile, St John’s cousin Leandra Alexander, told that he had been visiting the country for the carnival and was scheduled to return to the UK next Tuesday. “Adrian was very cool and jolly. He was a darling. He was never rude, never disrespectful, he was just a cool and quiet child,” Alexander said, as quoted by Trinidad & Tobago Guardian.

Donovan Miller, St John’s coach and mentor at the Chris Gayle Academy couldn’t recover from the shock, He said – “I’m really finding it hard to come to terms with it, how someone could do something like that to such a lovely person,” as quoted by the Press Association. “He wanted me to support him to go to the Caribbean and to push hard with his cricket. He’s just finished his degree at university, which we supported him through as well”, he added.
