Zaheer Khan will reportedly be joining the coaching staff of Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Mumbai Indians for the upcoming season. Zaheer has previously represented MI for three seasons as a player.

The 40-year-old former India will be mentoring MI bowlers which means Lasith Malinga, who was contracted to them in the role, will be heading out. Malinga, who recently returned to ODI cricket with impressive performances, will be throwing his hat in the ring at the IPL auction slated to be held next month and could return as a player after spending the 2018 season as MI bowling coach.

“It is expected. Malinga has been playing other leagues of the world,” Mumbai Mirror quoted a IPL source as saying on Sunday. He had even played for Sri Lanka in the Asia Cup, and he wants to test himself in the IPL which precedes the World Cup. He wants to play in the IPL to be match-fit for the World Cup.”

MI have been quite active in the IPL trading window having acquired Quinton de Kock from Royal Challengers Bangalore last month and released left-arm pacer Mustafizur Rahman and spinner Akila Dananjaya.

India opener Shikhar Dhawan, who has reportedly unhappy with his current IPL team Sunrisers Hyderabad, was also on the radar of the three-time winners before he returned to Delhi Daredevils.

Together with Chennai Super Kings, MI are the most successful IPL team in its 11 year history having won the league thrice.
