Kolkata: Former Mr Universe and celebrated bodybuilder Manohar Aich died at his home here following old age complications, family sources said. He was 102. A widower, Aich is survived by two sons and two daughters. Fully fit till sometime back, Aich breathed his last at his Baguiati home in northeastern Kolkata at 2.30 p.m. on Sunday. He won the Mr Universe title in 1952, and was given the name ‘Pocket Hercules’ due to his four feet, 11 inch frame. Aich was born on March 17, 1914 at Comilla district which is in present day Bangladesh. When he was a small child he got interested in bodybuilding. In 1942, Aich joined Royal Air Force where he trained quite hard; much more than he had ever done.

He served some time in prison as he had opposed the British. According to a report on, in 1947, when India gained independence, Aich was finally released from the prison. Even in his geriatrics, Aich continued to train budding bodybuilders and used to visit the gymnasium. Since he was quite old, he did not have the strength to lift heavy weights, but he did train children.

Aich was quite fond of Hollywood actor Arnold Schwarzenegger, who himself won Mr. Universe five times in the past. Aich did not drink and smoke. He took life lightly without letting stress and the tensions of life get the better of him. All of these factors are attributed to his long life. He was a motivation for all those who wish to achieve big things, and live a long and healthy life.
