‘Batting will be confusing…’: Ajinkya Rahane’s take on Washington Sundar playing at No. 3

Indian management sent Washington Sundar in place of Sai Sudharsan at No. 3 on 1st Test vs Proteas in Kolkata, for which Ajinkya Rahane has his own views to share.

The No. 3 slot in Test cricket is a crucial position for every team, and the Indian management is trying to get sending Sai Sudharsan to secure the place. However, the lineup witnessed a massive change in the first Test of the two-match series against South Africa, as Washington Sundar was sent to bat when Sudharsan was expected to come in.

This move by the team management has led to a number of questions- since Washington Sundar usually seen at No. 6. Even if we look at and compare the scores by any other Indian batter in the game, Washington scored as much as any other batter would have scored (considering the low-scoring match)- returning scores of 31 and 29 runs.

This move by the management has led to former Indian cricketer Ajinkya Rahane praising the allrounder for showing impressive skills and solid temperament. However, Rahane has also pointed out how the performance by Sundar will impose a negative impact on Sudharsan.

It’s very tough as a batter in Test cricket when you know your number is not set. You play at three and then suddenly you are out and the guy who bats at six is coming at three. Those who have done well at three and four have gotten that spot consistently for a long time before, you also send such signals. Sai Sudharsan did well at three against the West Indies. Sundar is a good batter, but coming at three and batting will be confusing for him. I believe he is a bowling all-rounder still,” Rahane said on ‘Ash ki Baat’.

Whoever is playing at three, be it Washi (Washington Sundar) or Sai (Sudharsan), it is important to get security at that spot, only then can you play with freedom. Otherwise, you cannot play your game. If the team management is looking at Sai at three, give him a long rope. Or if they are looking at Washi there, then give him a long rope so he can prepare. Even a player’s career is at stake. It is also important to communicate with the player sitting out then,” Rahane said.
