Mumbai Indians skipper, along with his team, has been fined a hefty amount for maintaining a slow over rate in the IPL clash against Gujarat Titans.

Mumbai Indians skipper Hardik Pandya has been fined Rs 24 lakh for maintaining a slow over rate. In addition to this hefty penalty on Hardik, the team members, including impact players and the concussion substitute, were also fined Rs 6 lakh or 25% of their match fees. “As it was his team’s second offence of the season under the IPL’s Code of Conduct relating to minimum over-rate offences, Pandya was fined Rs 24 lakh” the IPL sais in a statement.

The over-rate violation had tactical repercussions during the match, as Mumbai Indians were restricted to just four fielders outside the inner circle in the final over, significantly affecting their ability to defend the revised DLS target.

Gujarat Titans head coach Ashish Nehra was also fined and given a demerit point for conduct “contrary to the spirit of the game” in IPL clash. Although the IPL press release did not specify Ashish Nehra’s offence, the former pacer appeared visibly frustrated during the rain-interrupted match and was seen in intense discussions with the on-field umpires.

“Ashish Nehra, Head Coach, Gujarat Titans, has been fined 25 per cent of his match fees and has also accumulated one demerit point for breaching the IPL Code of Conduct,” the IPL stated. “He admitted to the Level 1 offence under Article 2.20 – which pertains to the conduct that is contrary to the spirit of the game – and accepted the match referee’s sanction,” it added.

Gujarat Titans climbed to the top spot with 16 points following their 3-wicket victory over Mumbai Indians via the DLS method. The Titans are now just one win away from playoff qualification and will face Delhi Capitals on May 11th at the Arun Jaitley Stadium.
