Playing against England in their backyard is always a different challenge and this was the World Cup semi-final. Indian team had a mix group stage, but they recovered well to qualify for the semi-final. This was the first time in three editions that the Indian side managed to do so.

The Indian medium-pacers impressed once again and restricted England to 213, but another major task was to still go out and chase the total down.

In the above photograph, we see Mohinder Amarnath playing a drive off the bowling of Vic Marks. Amarnath came in to bat at the fall of Sunil Gavaskar’s wicket at 46. He backed up his brilliant bowling spell (12-1-27-2) by scoring a composed, yet authoritative 46. A steady knock from Yashpal Sharma and a hurricane fifty from Sandeep Patil saw India chase down the total, as they entered the final.

It was Amarnath again who excelled in the final as India went on to beat West Indies to lift the World Cup for the first time.
