Indian team won the 2024 T20 World Cup under the captaincy of current ODI skipper Rohit Sharma. With the triumph, the Men in Blue ended their 13-year long drought of an ICC Trophy. The national side came close to winning the title several times since the victory in the 2011 ODI World cup, but faltered at the end moment.

The T20 World Cup squad showed nerves of steel and their dedication towards the country, and won the tournament without a single defeat. At the final, the team faltered and were looking out once again, but each and every player gave their best and pulled the game back in their grip. Rohit Sharma praised the team for the hunger that his team showed during the tournament.

Ek bhi match naa haarna aur ja ke World Cup jeetna ye bahut badi baat hai (Not losing a single match and then going on to win the World Cup is a huge achievement). I think wo desperation jo sab players ke andar tha aur humare jo support team thi unme tha, sab logo ne ek saath milkar contribute kiya aur eventually jab hum World Cup jeete sabko pata hi hai kitna badhiya celebration hua jab hum Bombay aaye. (I think the desperation that was within all the players and our support staff, everyone contributed together, and eventually when we won the World Cup, everyone knows how incredible the celebrations were when we came back to Mumbai),” Rohit Sharma said at an event.

Rohit Sharma announced his retirement from T20I cricket after India won the 2024 World Cup, and then he announced his retirement from Test cricket right before the national team went for the England tour. However, he is going to play in the ODI format with a goal of winning the World Cup in 2027.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) have not yet given any confirmation that there is any place for both Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli in the ODI World Cup, and they will have to consistently perform in order to secure their places in the tournament. Rohit is also likely going to lose his captaincy in the One-Day format, with Shubman Gill being taken as a potential candidate.
