From Anil Kumble to Gary Kirsten: Cricket legends who have become successful Coaches
There have been a lot of cricketers who have been very successful in their career, and have gotten an opportunity to lead other teams as well. Here are some of the well-known players who have also worked their time as coaches for some teams.
1) Anil Kumble (India)
Anil Kumble played for India from April 1990 to November 2008. He played 132 Tests, 271 ODIs, and 54 T20 matches during his career. He coached the Indian side to no. 1 ICC ranking in Test cricket.
2) Ravi Shastri (India)
Ravi Shastri was a very successful Indian cricketer. His cricketing career lasted from 1981 to 1992. In his career, Ravi played 80 Tests, 150 ODIs, and 278 List A matches. Ravi served as the coach of the Indian team from 2017 to 2021.
3) Gautam Gambhir (Kolkata Knight Riders)
Gautam Gambhir is a well-known cricketer, who was highly-praised during his time. His cricket journey began in 1999-2000 season, and he hung his boots in 2018. He led the IPL franchise Kolkata Knight Rides in the 2024 edition of the tournament, and led them to their third IPL title.
4) Rahul Dravid (India)
Rahul Dravid is one of the most-known Indian cricketer. He had a successful career for Indian since April 1996 to March 2012. He was the coach of the Men in Blue for their iconic ICC T20 Men's World Cup 2024 title.
5) Gary Kirsten (India & South Africa)
Gary Kirsten was a left handed opening batter for South Africa. He retired from international cricket in 2004. Gary coached Indian team from 2008 to 2011, and coached South African team from 2011 to 2013.
6) Stephen Fleming (Chennai Super Kings)
The former New Zealand top-order batter played cricket from December 1998 to 2004. He got appointed as the head coach of CSK in 2009, and will be continuing as their coach for the 2025 season as well.
7) Andy Flower (England)
The former Zimbabwe wicketkeeper has earned a lot of respect and fame in cricket world. He helped England to win their first-ever ICC global trophy, as they won the T20 World Cup in 2010.
8) John Wright (India & New Zealand)
The former New Zealand opening batter coached Indian team rom 2000 to 2005. He led the team to some notable victories, such as 2001 win against Australia, series win in Pakistan, along with Test victories in England and Australia. He even guided New Zealand to their first Test win in 26 years in 2011.
