Former South African cricketer and icon batter AB de Villiers hinted his fans and the cricket world about his comeback in the Indian Premier League (IPL) as a coach or mentor for his ex team Royal Challengers Bengaluru. De Villiers started his IPL career with Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals) as a wicket-keeper batsman in 2008.

AB de Villiers, who announced his retirement in 2021 from all the formats of cricket. He stated that his desired role in the Indian Premier League (IPL) is likely to be the mentor or coach of his ex-team Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), to make their bond remain.

I might be involved with the IPL again in the future in a different role, but committing to a full season in a professional capacity is really tricky, and I believe those days are done. That said, you never say never. My heart is with RCB and always will be. So, if the franchise feels there’s a role for me (as a coach or mentor), when my time is right and ready, it will definitely be RCB,” De Villiers told to IANS.

AB de Villiers has played 157 matches for RCB and scores 4,522 runs for them with an average of 41.10 and a strike rate of 158.33. He also smashed two centuries and 37 fifties for Royal Challengers Bengaluru.

The South African batter AB de Villiers also holds a record for the highest partnership in IPL history of 229 runs for the second wicket with the best Indian batter Virat Kohli, against the Gujrat Lions in the 2016 season. De Villiers scored 687 runs in that season.
