‘India agreed too easily, no hype…’: Former Pakistan captain on Asia Cup 2025 clash

Former Pakistan captain Rashid Latif says India’s easy decision to face Pakistan in the Asia Cup has reduced the hype around the big clash in Dubai, adding that high ticket prices have also dampened excitement.

Rashid Latif, a former captain of Pakistan, believes that India’s decision to play Pakistan in the Asia Cup took away from the excitement of the big game, which will be held in Dubai on Sunday. According to the Union Sports Ministry, India may face Pakistan in “international and multilateral events,” but not “bilateral sports events in each other’s country.” India’s decision to play Pakistan in the Asia Cup, which features eight teams, is in line with the government’s stance.

I’m surprised to know that this time, India agreed to play Pakistan very easily and that’s why there is no hype around the match,” Latif told IANS. “Things get hyped when it is censored or there is any hurdle. The tickets are still selling in Dubai and this is the first time.”

The 56-year-old also said that the high ticket prices have made the build-up to the big event in Dubai less exciting.

Otherwise, wherever they play, be it in Centurion, Sydney or in Chennai, it is houseful every time. The people will surely come and it will be a packed house. The ticket prices are also very high. However, the match will get hype from tomorrow, and it will be a good contest,” Latif added.

India, led by Suryakumar Yadav, began their campaign on Wednesday with a commanding nine-wicket win over the UAE. Pakistan will launch their campaign on Friday against Oman before facing India.

Earlier, 1983 World Cup-winning captain Kapil Dev said people shouldn’t turn this into a big issue. He added that “government will do its job, and the players should do theirs“.

Speaking to reporters on Thursday, Kapil Dev said, “Just go and win. Those whose job is to play should just focus on playing – there’s no need to say anything else. Don’t make this a big issue. The government will do its job, and the players should do theirs.”
