New Zealand legend Kane Williamson has announced his retirement from the T20I format, citing the team needing clarity for the upcoming T20 World Cup.
Kane Williamson put an end to his T20I career while being his country’s second-highest run-scorer; posting a total of 22,575 runs in 93 matches- including 18 half-centuries while averaging at 33.3.Williamson also led his team to the 2021 T20 World Cup final, and to the semifinals in 2016 and 2022.
35-year-old Kane Williamson had confirmed that he will cut down his international duties in order to focus more o his family and play more in professional white-ball leagues.
“It’s the right time for myself and the team. It gives the team clarity for the series moving forward and ahead of their next major focus which is the T20 World Cup. There’s so much T20 talent there and the next period will be important to get cricket into these guys and get them ready for the World Cup,” Williamson said in a statement.
