Mahela Jayawardena with his wife Christina Mallika Sirisena

Mahela Jayawardene is inarguably one of the greatest cricketers the world has ever witnessed. He was acknowledged for his unblemished stroke-play and canny improvisations at the crease. He made his International debut in 1997 in the iconic Test Match against India at Colombo and has been one of the prolific run-scorer since then. He amassed 10,000 runs both in Tests and One-Day Internationals (ODIs) and holds the record to have more than 10,000 runs in his basket in ODIs along with his Sri Lankan compatriots Sanath Jayasuriya and Kumar Sangakkara.

Jayawardene got married to Christina Mallika Sirisena on November 3, 2005. The couple have been gleefully married for nine years and are blessed with a baby girl, Sansa Arya. Christina, who is born to Sri Lankan – Danish parents, is a travel consultant by profession. She was born in Denmark and came to Sri Lanka with her parents on a holiday when she was just two-years old; later settled down permanently in 1990.

Jayawardene was honoured with ICC captain of the year 2006 award. He successfully led his side into the final of the 2007 World Cup but failed to triumph. Unfortunately, he is the only player to have scored a hundred in the final of a World Cup and end up being on the losing side, when he smashed a scintillating century against India in 2011. He retired from International cricket on 18 March, 2015 where he played his final ODI against South Africa in the quarter-finals of World Cup 2015.
