Mike Gatting: Short and wide!

Picture on the left is how former England skipper Mike Gatting looked, two years before retaining the Ashes 1986-87 in Australia. A Test career spanning over two decades, Gatting was a colourful cricketer and a very good batsman against spin.

Gatting was also at the receiving end of many jokes. Once, stopping midway during his run-up, Dennis Lillee had shouted at Gatting, “Hell, Gatt [Gatting], move out of the way, I can’t see the stumps.” Gatting was also the victim of Shane Warne’s ‘Ball of the Century’.

Photo on the right is a recent picture of Gatting. He is currently England and Wales Cricket Board’s (ECB) Managing Director of Cricket Partnerships and President of Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC). Earlier this year, he was also the manager of the MCC side, which played against Rest of the World XI in the famous Lord’s Bicentenary match.
