As India gears up for South Africa Tests, former spinner R Ashwin has shared his take on Shubman Gill's batting approach.
Shubman Gill has been constantly featuring for India throughout the year, and his continuous performances have led to debates rising over his workload. On this topic, R Ashwin feels that it is comparatively easy for Gill to play all three formats because of his batting style. He also noted that shifting from limited-over format to Tests is quite challenging- for which the 25-year-old needs to improve his defensive skills.
“It is slightly easier for Shubman Gill because he is playing all three formats. Obviously, in red-ball it will be challenging. The ball will move. You will have to give respect to the bowler. He needs to work on his defence. Understandable that to make a switch from T20 to Test cricket is not easy. But, having said that, to be in flow is much better than not being in the flow,” Ashwin said on his YouTube channel.
Apart from suggesting to play defense in order to play Test format more comfortably, Ashwin pointed out how Shubman Gill’s batting approach makes it easier form him to perform in all the three formats – noting that the batter is currently on a ‘purple patch‘.
“I think the batting form which Shubman Gill is in, it is easier for him (to play all three formats). He is on a purple patch, As a cricketer he would be itching to play,” Ashwin noted.
Speaking about Shubman Gill, he will be leading the Indian team in the upcoming Test series against South Africa, set to begin November 14. Gill has been in great form ever since the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy against England earlier this year, and will aim to continue his spectacular show.
