Shreyas Iyer injury update: Apollo doctors explains what happened and spoke about Hidden danger of such a blow

Shreyas Iyer injured his spleen while fielding against Australia in the recent ODI series. Now, a doctor from Apollo Hospitals has shared insights on the concussion.

Indian ODI vice-captain Shreyas Iyer was injured a while ago, when the team was facing Australia for a three-match series. Actually, Shreyas attempted a leaping catch – which he secured successfully – but hurt his rib during the process. He was then taken off the field at the time, and was later sent to hospital for proper treatment.

Recently, Shreyas Iyer was released from the hospital where he was admitted in Sydney, leading to all the cricket fans breathing a sigh of relief. But as the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed earlier, the blow was far more serious – as it was a spleen laceration with internal bleeding. Now, a surgeon from Apollo Hospitals, Delhi, has shared insights about the injury in a social media video.

Dr. Anshuman Kaushal is a bariatric surgeon, and has explained in detail what happens when such an injury is faced. Dr. Kaushal labelled the spleen as “immune powerhouse” that filters out blood, removes old red blood cells and also supports the immunity system. “Imagine this—a fast-rising ball hits your left side and your abdomen’s organ silently bleeds. That’s exactly what happened to Shreyas Iyer’s spleen,” Dr. Kaushal said in his post.

According to Dr. Anshuman Kaushal, an impact of such caliber that was delivered to Shreyas Iyer might lead to a bruise on the spleen’s outer covering, a laceration, or even complete breakage in severe cases. He also warned about internal bleeding, which often shows symptoms like shoulder pain, dizziness and low blood pressure.

Dr. Anshuman Kaushal, while referring to Apollo Hospital’s approach, spoke about the first step after such an injury – is stabilizing the patient and conducting a CT scan to determine the grade of the specific injury from Grade 1 to Grade 5 – 1 being mild to 5 being severe.

If the patient is unstable or shows signs of inflammation of abdominal lining, an immediate surgery is required. As er the situations, surgeons either repair the spleen, use special agents to stop the bleeding, or remove the entire spleen in extreme cases.

Dr. Anshuman Kaushal further explained, “low-grade spleen injuries allow players to resume activity in about six weeks, but high-grade injuries can take three to four months,” referring to the varying time for athletes to recover from injuries. Apart from that, the BCCI has confirmed that Shreyas will be out of action for at least two months.
