After Rohit Sharma retired from Test cricket, the suspense in high on who will be the next red-ball captain. Shubman Gill's name is the top contender for the place, whereas Jasprit Bumrah and KL Rahul are also on the list. On the topic of the captain, legend Sunil Gavaskar and veteran bowled Ravichandran Ashwin have shared their views

Ashwin said in his YouTube show 'Aish Ki Baat', I had no idea that both (Rohit and Kohli) would retire together, it would be a difficult time for Indian cricket and it is really the beginning of the Gautam Gambhir era now.

R Ashwin has said that the sudden retirement of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli has created a huge leadership void in India's Test team. He said, retirement of Kohli and Rohit will definitely create a void in leadership, experience cannot be bought, Virat's energy and Rohit's balance will be greatly missed in Test cricket.

Ashwin said, the team that will tour England will be completely new and changed, where Bumrah will probably be the most senior player, he is definitely in the options to become the captain.

Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar feels that if Bumrah himself is the captain of the team, then the concern about bowling workload can be addressed. Gavaskar told Sports Today, who can know better than himself what his workload is? If you appoint someone else, they will always want an extra over from Bumrah, if he is your number 1 bowler, he will know himself that 'yes, this is the time I should take a break. According to me, it can only be Jasprit Bumrah.

There have been concerns about Jasprit Bumrah's injuries after he was made the full-time captain. He suffered a back problem during the Sydney Test and had to miss the home limited-overs series against England, the Champions Trophy and the start of IPL 2025.
