Temba Bavuma speaks about his “Dream of Playing at Lord’s” ahead of the World Test Championship 2025 final
The last time South Africa and Australia faced each other in a Test series, it was the year 2022-23 and the visitors had lost 0-2.
As South Africa's Test captain Temba Bavuma prepares to lead his team ahead of the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2025 final against Australia, he reflected on his cricketing career. The Lord's cricket ground is the very one that he once imagined to play on. South Africa last faced Australia in a Test series in 2022-23.
“There was always some sort of allegiance with Lord's when we were growing up in Langa,” Bavuma told The Guardian.
“On the right-hand side of the street the tar wasn't done so nicely and we used to call it Karachi. The other side was the MCG. But my favorite section was clean and done up nicely, and we called it Lord's because it just looked better. As a kid of 10, I already had that dream of playing at Lord's," he said.
Temba Bavuma not only carries hopes of his team, but also the weight of his remarkable journey which is shaped with equality and opportunity.
Under the leadership of Temba Bavuma, South Africa won seven consecutive Test matches, securing their place in the final against Australia- set to begin June 11. The team will appear in the final apart from facing inequality in schedule, unavailable players and constraints in fundings.
