VRV Singh: Life and times

Born September 17, 1984, Vikram Raj Vir Singh, is an Indian cricket cricketer, who played in five Tests and three One-Day Internationals (ODIs) in between 2006 and 2007.

 

VRV, as he is commonly referred to, made his First-Class debut in 2004 and went on to become a mainstay for Punjab. In June 2006, he made his Test debut against West Indies at Antigua. Tall, open-chested, VRV was a genuine fast bowler in the making but couldn’t fulfil his potential at the highest level and injuries played a part in hampering his progress.

 

He failed to pick a wicket in ODIs and from his five Tests; he has only eight wickets at a dismal average of 53.37. However, in First-Class cricket he has 121 wickets at an impressive average of 24.81.

 

Once VVS Laxman referred him as the “fastest bowler in India”. Despite not having enough credentials as a batsman, he is best remembered for his 44-run last wicket stand with Sourav Ganguly in the Durban Test of 2006. It was a difficult track and his 19-ball 29 took India’s score to 249. Later, India won the Test by 123 runs.
