Albert Padmore Biography

Albert Padmore was a decent off-spinner, but also one of the reasons why West Indies embarked on the mission to dominate the world with pace.

On his debut, he was entrusted, along with Raphick Jumadeen and Imtiaz Ali, the task to turn the ball and get the Indians out in the second innings. There were more than 400 runs within which they had to do it. In the end, Padmore finished with none for 98, Imtiaz none for 52 and Jumadeen 2 for 70. India triumphed by six wickets. Captain Clive Lloyd had had enough. In the next Test match, Michael Holding and Wayne Daniel were instructed to bowl near-Bodyline.

Padmore played only one more Test — and with the fast bowlers capturing every wicket on offer, he bowled just 3 overs. Despite Lloyd’s pace-dependent attack, however, Padmore finished the tour (England, 1976) with 59 wickets at 23.40 — the highest among the tourists.

Later, he hired himself out in the Kerry Packer World Series Cricket, where did a commendable job, taking 41 wickets at 26.80 in the limited-overs matches.

He also led a star-studded Barbados side, winning two Shell Shield titles in three seasons. Then, controversially, during the West Indian rebel tour of South Africa in 1983. His career ended with a life ban.

Gifted with a terrific sense of humour, Padmore later settled down in Florida.
