Andy Roberts had the misfortune of being a contemporary of a legendary contemporary namesake in the same sport. There was scant solace in the fact that he was essentially a batsman who bowled medium-pace.

In fact, his numbers (5,865 runs at 35, 84 wickets at 30 from 112 matches, mostly for Northern Districts) make quite decent reading. Unfortunately, his 7 Tests fetched a mere 254 runs at 23; that, along with the fact that his namesake Antiguan was one of the most-feared bowlers of the era, pushed him into relative obscurity.

He did have his moments. When he got his maiden First-Class hundred (120), against Wellington in 1974-75, nobody else in the side reached fifty. The next season he got 104* against Auckland; this time nobody else topped 35; and that combination had an encore (104* personal, 35 next-best) against the touring Indians.

He went on the twin tour of Pakistan and India in 1976-77: in the only ODI of his career, at Sialkot, he took 1 for 30 from 7 overs as New Zealand won by 1 run; at Karachi he played two neat cameos of 39 and 45; and at Kanpur he smashed an unbeaten 84 (New Zealand scored 126 during his stay) against three Indian spinners.

The highest point of his career came in 1979-80, when he helped Northern Districts win the Plunket Shield for the second time. He scored 414 runs at 41.40 and claimed 8 wickets. This included 60 and 128* against Central Districts where he shepherded a 314-run chase. That season he also scored 54 and 50 against the touring West Indians.

He died suddenly in 1989. At 42 years 173 days he remains New Zealand’s second-shortest-lived Test cricketer, after Ken Wadsworth.
