In the 1990s, Angus Fraser captured 165 Test wickets at 26.86 in 43 Tests, the best by an England bowler by some distance in terms of both wickets and bowling average. He picked up 13 five-fors, his closest rival being Darren Gough with 6. Yet, his career was restricted to just 46 Tests, which saw him taking 177 wickets.
A classical English seamer, with a penchant for bowling outside the off-stump, Fraser suffered from injuries and a curious selection policy. Especially Chairman of Selectors Ray Illingworth did not quite turn out to be a supporter. He did miss two years because of a hip injury, and Illingworth was sceptical about his fitness.
But, if we do look at his figures, Fraser was actually more impressive after his return. Before his problems he had 47 wickets at 26.70 with a strike rate of 66 in 11 Tests. After his return, his 35 remaining Tests saw him taking 130 wickets at a slightly more expensive 27.54, but a much better strike rate of 61.5.
He picked out West Indies for special treatment, taking 70 wickets against them in 17 Tests at 24. At their den his 54 wickets came at a mere 20 including 4 five-fors, two of which were eight-wicket hauls. In fact, Fraser is the only bowler (including West Indians) to take two eight-fors on West Indian soil.
However, some excellent bowling performances did not stop him from being omitted after England’s disappointing World Cup campaign in 1999.
He continued to play for Middlesex and is acknowledged a legend for the county. After retirement, he moved into the media and later became Managing Director of Middlesex and Chief Selector of England.
