Following his excellent performances in domestic cricket, Bharat Arun was selected as Kapil Dev’s opening partner. He was unfortunate in the sense that he made his debut on a track so flat that even two innings were not complete, but he was the pick of the bowlers, finishing with three for 76.
He missed the next Test, then was picked but under-bowled in the one that followed at Cuttack, and was never selected again. Despite his prowess with the bat at domestic level (he hammered 149 and added 221 with WV Raman to clinch the 1986-87 Duleep Trophy title for South Zone) he could never prove his mettle with the bat at the highest level.
Arun went on to become the coach of Bengal and a coach at NCA, but more famously, he went on to coach India Under-19 to their 2012 World Cup triumph. He was appointed assistant coach for the Indian ODI side in 2014 on their tour to England.
