Brad Hodge’s life and times in pictures
South Africa vs Australia, 2nd T20I at Durban
Brad Hodge was born in an era when the Australian side ruled world cricket. As a result, he couldn’t break into the side and could only make his Test debut at the age of 30. Although he scored a double hundred against South Africa at Perth in 2005-06, he only played three more Tests. But, Australia’s loss was the world’s gain as Hodge became a prolific run-scorer in Twenty20 cricket and made a name for himself as a specialist in the format.
Perhaps the greatest attribute of Hodge’s batting is the fact that he always seems to have time in his hand while playing a shot. He is cool at the crease and does not allow the pressure to get to him. Once Twenty20 arrived on the scenario, he instantly took to it and remains one of the most prolific run-scorer in the format.
After scoring over 17,000 runs in First-Class cricket, he gave it up in 2009 to solely focus on the shortest format. He did have his opportunities in One-Day Internationals (ODIs) and T20Is, being a member of the 2007 World Cup winning side, a tournament in which he managed a ton but was subsequently left out of the side.
Hodge last made an appearance for Australia at the ICC World T20 2014. Even though he is touching 40, he remains an effective Twenty20 cricketer across the world and is an important part of the Rajasthan Royals in the Indian Premier League (IPL).
