Chamara Kapugedera was picked as a teenager in early 2006 as Sri Lanka yearned to harvest his potential. Even though he was inconsistent after making his ODI debut in Australia that year and only scored his first 50 in his 10th game, Sri Lanka persisted with him and handed him a Test debut at Lord’s that year. Kapugedera failed in that game as Sri Lanka drew it, but in the third Test, he scored his first fifty in a game won by Sri Lanka.
Kapugedera did not establish himself in the Test side but became an ODI regular after the 2007 World Cup. He played some quick cameos in the middle order, and gifted with the ability to explode, he was often a dangerous batsman in the slog overs. He has never got a hundred (though he has a 96 in Tests and a 95 in ODIs).
Kapugedera is an aggressive batsman who likes to play his shots, and is certainly not hesitant to go over the top of the field. One of his biggest moments came when he smashed a six off the last ball against India in a crucial World T20 2010 clash to take Sri Lanka through to the semifinal. He was also a part of the team that went into the final of the 2011 World Cup.
Kapugedera has played for the Chennai Super Kings in IPL.
