When Mike Gatting’s England side won the Ashes in 1986-87, Broad scored 162 at Perth, 116 at Adelaide and 112 at Melbourne. Thus, he became the first man after Jack Hobbs and Wally Hammond to score three consecutive hundreds in an Ashes series.
A year later, when Australia and England locked horns in Sydney for the Bicentenary Test, Broad hit 139. He wanted to score even more, because after being bowled he smashed down the stumps. In all his career, he averaged 59 against Australia.
However, against the two better attacks of that era, the sheen came off his batting. Although he started his Test career with an impressive 55 against the rampaging 1984 West Indians, he scored at 22.16 in the Tests he played against the mighty bowling. And though he did score 116 in the Faisalabad Test made infamous by the Gatting-Shakoor Rana incident, his record against the Imran-Akram-Qadir line up remained mediocre.
Lacking the grace that generally touches left-handed batsmen, Broad managed 1,661 runs at 39.52 for England. That he did don English colours was a result of extreme ambition that made him ditch his native Gloucestershire for Nottinghamshire in 1983, the reason cited being the lack of ambition of the county holding his own career back.
The few seasons of success did come along, but after his second run in with the West Indians in 1988 he lost his form totally. He was dropped when he was seen mouthing abuse at being given out leg-before at Lord’s.
The arrival of the 1989 Australians perhaps gave rise to hope that Broad would regain his Ashes magic. But when he did not manage to score much in four innings he was sidelined for good. Broad actually found solace in returning to Gloucestershire after this.
For a man who was not really the best-behaved in his playing days, Broad’s subsequent appointment as ICC match referee was surprising to say the least. His son Stuart is one of the leading bowlers of England today.
