Born in Sri Lanka, Dav Whatmore moved to Australia at a young age. A capable batsman and an outstanding fielder, he was soon appointed vice-captain of Victoria. He played seven Tests and an ODI (and took a catch as substitute in World Cup 1979) during the Kerry Packer regime, but with limited success.
He returned to his home country and was hailed a national hero when they, as underdogs, lifted World Cup 1996. He also coached Lancashire to the National League title in 1998 and 1999 and the NatWest Trophy in 1998. He had another stint with Sri Lanka.
Whatmore took over Bangladesh in 2003 — a side that beat Australia in 2005 and both India and South Africa in World Cup 2007. He later had a contract with Kolkata Knight Riders in IPL, and coached Pakistan to Asia Cup in 2012.
In 2014-15, Whatmore was appointed the coach of Zimbabwe ahead of the World Cup.
