A better batsman than wicketkeeper, Deep Dasgupta sometimes looked awkward behind the stumps at the highest level but seldom in front. He was one of several wicketkeepers India used between Nayan Mongia and MS Dhoni.
His achievements in Test cricket were primarily with the willow. A stonewaller with seemingly indistinguishable temperament, Dasgupta could bat for hours, presenting the bowlers with a straight bat, accumulating runs once they ran out of steam.
He scored a crucial 34, batting at No. 7 on debut at Bloemfontein. He was asked to open in his second Test, and he continued to open ever since. In his second Test, at Port Elizabeth, he batted almost throughout Day Five to carve out a 281-ball 63 to save the Test.
Back home he started with a round 100 against England at Mohali. In the fourth innings of the next Test he scored a gritty 60. After 4 Tests his numbers read an impressive 291 runs at 42. Unfortunately, the next 4 Tests fetched him a mere 53 runs at 11, and he never played again. His glovework was never the best, and with stiff competition coming from Ajay Ratra and Parthiv Patel, and later Dinesh Karthik, he could never come back.
He had a late start to his Ranji Trophy career, having to wait for the retirement of Saba Karim. However, once he was there, the ascent to Test cricket had been sharp. Once dropped from the Test side he continued to play domestic cricket till 2009-10, scoring 3,806 First-Class runs and effecting 212 dismissals. He led Bengal to consecutive Ranji Trophy finals in 2005-06 and 2006-07. He also played in ICL.
He is currently a commentator.

India vs Australia 2021: David Warner suffered a groin injury while fielding during the 2nd ODI vs India in November.
Virat Kohli led the Indian team to many historic wins including the first-ever series win Down Under during 2018-19 tour.
Nayan Mongia, MSK Prasad and Deep Dasgupta agreed in unison that at present it will be a two-horse race between KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant.
Dasgupta, who played eight Test matches and five ODIs for India between 2001 and 2002, added that Lara would want to engage in a ...
Dasgupta claims that unless keepers makes runs, it's difficult for them to get noticed and the current system has to be blamed for that.
Bengal head coach Arun Lal came up with the suggestion as eyesight is prone to be affected once cricketers return from long layoffs.
If India can get Rahul and Pant a couple of games against Australia, it will further add further shape.
There's no reason to change India's last ODI squad, but surprises could be in store.
Watching Rishabh finish 2nd T20I in presence of Dhoni for me was like symbolic handing over the baton. It was a wonderful sight to behold.
Why did India pack three wicketkeepers and three allrounders in their side?
But was handing Shubman Gill an ODI debut when he's unlikely for the World Cup the right move?
Hardik and his ilk need a little more hand holding and patience than other cricketers.
