Despite his talent, the career of Dhiraj Parsana coincided with that of Bishan Singh Bedi, which meant he also had to fight with Padmakar Shivalkar and Rajinder Goel for a Test spot. The selectors tried Parsana (probably because he could also bat) once Bedi quit, but by then, Dilip Doshi had joined the fray, and Ravi Shastri followed soon afterwards.
The son of a rich farmer who owned 40 acres of land, Parsana started off as a left-arm swing bowler who could move the ball both ways, before adding spin to his repertoire. He scored 2,946 runs at 27 and snared 320 wickets at 22. These are excellent numbers, but what made them more special is the fact that he played for Railways, Saurashtra, and Gujarat — the weaker sides in the group.
Parsana rose to fame by routing Punjab with 6 for 45 and 7 for 146 in 1968-69. He was only the second Railways bowler to take 13 wickets in a match. A job with Mafatlal made him quit Railways; for Gujarat he was a stalwart, with bat and ball, both new and old.
His most famous performance (104*, 4 for 56, 41, 5 for 74 in the same match) came against Baroda. The following season he had a run of match figures of 6 for 108, 8 for 110, 9 for 190, 9 for 97, and 6 for 69 in consecutive matches.
The streak gave him a Test cap against a Packer-hit West Indies. Parsana toiled hard for 1 for 39. He did not even get a bowl in the first innings of the next Test, and was under-bowled in the second. His career figures read 20-6-50-1, while his batting read 1 and 0.
Parsana played for Durham in the Minor Counties Championship. His farming background came handy during his stints with Durham, where he developed an ‘understanding’ of pitches. He joined LD Engineering College as groundsman, and was appointed curator of Motera in 1982. He was on BCCI’s pitches and grounds committee.
