Dilruwan Perera first came into the Sri Lankan setup in 2007 when his idol Muttiah Muralitharan — Saqlain Mushtaq was his other idol — picked up an injury before the World T20. Trained by Ashley Mallett and Ruwan Kalpage at Sri Lanka Spin Academy, Perera emerged from Colombo Colts, and still continues to play for them.
Perera was picked as an all-rounder who could bat at the top and also bowl some handy off-spin. He made his ODI debut against England that year and also toured Australia for the tri-series in early 2008.
Known for his off-breaks and one that goes straight with the arm, Perera did not shine in his early opportunities and then briefly returned for a few T20 Internationals in 2011. In 2014, he made his Test debut against Pakistan at Sharjah and scored 95 in his maiden outing.
