Dominic Cork’s day out at Lord’s; England pull off a thriller to level series against West Indies
Dominic Cork: Life and times
England vs West Indies, 5th Test, The Oval, 2000
Making his Test debut at Lord’s against a still formidable West Indies in 1995, Cork batted with plenty of purpose for 30 and 23, and then bowled England to win with 7 for 53. He followed it up with a 4-wicket haul at Edgbaston, and at Old Trafford captured 4 wickets in the first innings, hit an impressive unbeaten 56 and finally took 4 more in the second innings with a hat-trick that included Richie Richardson and Carl Hooper. He ended the series with 197 runs at 28.14 and 26 wickets at 25.42.
He got 25 wickets at 25.52 in South Africa, in the series that followed, including 9 at Johannesburg in the Atherton-185 Test and 7 in Port Elizabeth.
Sadly, the explosive form could not be continued. He batted well in New Zealand, nothing up his second half century, but Geoff Boycott was nasty enough to brand him a show pony when his wicket -taking ability was affected.
It was not until the return of West Indies in 2000 that he had another glorious match at Lord’s. He captured 4 for 39 in the first innings and 3 for 13 in the second, and walked in at 140 for 6 with 48 remaining to win Courtney Walsh almost unplayable and Curtly Ambrose hardly giving a run away. Cork lost Nick Knight within 9 runs, but shepherded Darren Gough and Andy Caddick, scoring 33 with four fours and a six and taking England past the finishing line.
But the sting in his out-swinger never returned after 1996, and there were problems with the management. Made captain of Derbyshire, he had to buy his way out of his contract and move to Lancashire. He never really regained the glory of his first season in Tests, but the brilliance flashed briefly when he scored 540 runs and captured 43 wickets in 2005 to engineer Lancashire’s promotion to Division One. Later, he moved to Hampshire and led them to the T20 title in 2010.
One of the many, many English talents branded the new Botham, Cork’s Test figures, especially with the ball, reads better than most.
