In many ways Howarth’s was a curious career.
He never quite blazed away with the bat, apart from occasional heroic efforts that made many wonder what might have been. In his first 19 Test innings he passed 50 just twice, raising plenty of doubts about persisting with him, but suddenly scored 122 and 102 in the same Test at Eden Park against Bob Willis, Ian Botham, John Lever and Phil Edmonds, helping the Kiwis to save the match and series.
There followed a classy period during which he hammered 94 at The Oval, 123 at Lord’s against exceptional swing bowling, and finally 114 against Pakistan at Napier. He was then handed captaincy, and he led New Zealand to a celebrated series victory against the world-conquering West Indies. Howarth led from the front, slamming 147 at Christchurch against that phenomenal bowling.
He batted valiantly against Australia whenever he clashed against them, and hit 137 at Wellington against India in a memorable win. However, the batting went downhill after that, with just six 50s in 40 innings after that.
Yet, it was under his captaincy that New Zealand won the first Test in England and the first series against the country. He also won series against India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka, with Australia being the only Test-playing nation against whom he remained unsuccessful as captain.
Even in the limited-overs game, the team remained more than competitive during his tenure. Hadlee’s genius did most of the work, but the canny captaincy of Howarth was sometimes as important.
Howarth remains a rare New Zealand captain to have a positive win-loss ratio in both Tests (11-7) and ODIs (31-26). The end of his career was a rather sad affair, with struggle for form and weakening eyesight, compounded by some shabby treatment from Surrey. However, he remains one of the leading captains in cricket history. He was awarded the MBE in 1981 while in 1984 he received the honour of the OBE.
