Glenn Maxwell is crystal clear what he needs to do to get back: Justin Langer
Nicknamed the ‘Big Show’, Glenn Maxwell is the template for a modern limited-overs cricketer. He has often delighted cricket with pyrotechnics living up to his moniker. His quick scoring, electrifying fielding and handy off-breaks make him an asset to any limited-overs side.
He first made his name for Victoria when he smashed a record 19-ball fifty against Tasmania in 2011 and since then has lived up to the reputation. He grabbed more headlines when he fetched a whopping USD 1 million from Mumbai Indians in the IPL 2013. The following season Kings XI Punjab nabbed him and his exploits helped the franchise qualify for the tournament final.
Much before this, his international debut came in an ODI against Afghanistan at Sharjah. He rose in reputation in the same tour when he smashed a 38-ball 56 not out to guide Australia to a win in the ODI series decider against Pakistan. His fearlessness added with his ability to spin the ball earned him a Test call for the tour of India in 2013. Having made his debut in Hyderabad, the all-rounder opened the batting and bowling in the Delhi Test. Australia went on to lose the series 0-4.
Maxwell is a vital cog in Australia’s limited-overs setup. From defending two off the final over against Pakistan at Abu Dhabi in the final ODI to smashing the second-fastest World Cup hundred at Sydney to butchering a 65-ball unbeaten 145 at Pallekele to mark his comeback, Maxwell has graced limited-overs cricket with some rare spectacles.
He was dropped from the Victoria First-Class side in late 2016 but his Test fortunes received a boost later that season when he surprisingly found himself in Australia’s 15-member squad for the India tour in 2016-17. Maxwell marked his return with a fine century at Ranchi, in the third Test.
The unorthodoxy in his approach has led to several ‘wow’ moments along with piling of frustrations but being of a rare breed, national selectors have backed him over the years. So did his IPL franchise — KXIP, and named him the captain for the 2017 edition.
