A pocket-sized dynamo who was good enough to break in through to the West Indian side in their heydays, Gus Logie would forever be remembered for his outstanding fielding. He manned any position, but his greatest catches came at short-leg, where he seldom flinched and showed outstanding reflex for a man standing that close.
With bat he was gutsy, and his diminutive frame made him a spectacular puller and cutter of the ball. He also had excellent footwork, especially against spinners, that enabled him to play those booming drives when required. However, he seldom got those big scores, and his 2,470 runs from 52 Tests came at a mere 36, while his 2,809 ODI runs came at 29 and a strike rate of 74.
His finest effort with bat came in 1989-90; walking out at 27 for 4 he lashed out at the English bowlers, getting last out for a 139-ball 98 as West Indies crashed to 199. At Lord’s in 1988 he got 81 and 95. When Narendra Hirwani routed West Indies twice on debut in Madras, he launched a furious fourth-innings onslaught, smashing 67 in 62 balls.
At Sabina Park in 1990-91 he was hit by Craig McDermott on his face, retired hurt for 9, had seven stitches done, returned to bat and smashed another 68 out of 98 West Indies scored during his stay at the crease.
With Clive Lloyd and Larry Gomes retiring in quick succession, he fought for the two slots, but inconsistency cost him. He lost out to Richie Richardson and Carl Hooper in the long run.
In ODIs, however, Logie was an automatic choice based on fielding alone. Against Pakistan in 1986 at Sharjah he took 3 catches, ran out 2 men, and stopped runs by the dozen. He did not get to bat, but became the first to win a Man of the Match award for fielding.
He was honoured with the Trinidad and Tobago Sportsman of the Year Award in 1988 and the Humming Bird Silver Medal for his service to sport in Trinidad and Tobago in 1993.
Always a keen cricket coach, Logie had started coaching Central Lancashire Schools at a mere 27 when he was still an active cricketer. He later coached Windward Islands and West Indies B and A. He also coached Canada in World Cup 2003, where they beat Bangladesh and fought gamely against several teams.
He had a short, turbulent tenure as West Indies coach before helping Bermuda qualify for World Cup 2007.

The pocket-sized Gus Logie was one of the greatest fielders of all time.
Augustine Lawrence ‘Gus’ Logie, born September 28, 1960, was probably the best fielder of his era — along with teammate Roger Harper.
Children seldom wanted to field, and usually the youngest were sent to hunt leather at grass-root level. But then, Gus Logie was different.
