Guy Whittall Biography

Guy Whittall played for Zimbabwe in their golden days, in the three years on either side of 2000. He could hit the ball hard and bowled seam, and his swift running, safe catching, and flat, accurate throws made him an asset in the outfield.

Whittall got 4 Test hundreds, all at home, but there was a catch: the hundreds were 113*, 203*, 188*, and 119. In other words, he was almost impossible to dismiss when he got a Test hundred, and averaged 623 in these 4 innings. To put things into perspective, Don Bradman averaged 234.47 in his ‘century innings’.

And when he got that 113*, he also took 2 for 49 and 3 for 58 in the same Test, helping Zimbabwe win by an innings against Pakistan. His other famous spell came in 1996-97, when he took 4 for 18 to bowl out England for 156. And at Trent Bridge in 2000 he claimed 2 for 47 and 3 for 14.

Hailed as a teenage prodigy, Whittall was a mere 16 when he played for Zimbabwe Schools. Two years later he played Worcestershire for a representative Zimbabwe side. In another three years he made his Test debut.

Whittall was also a competent ODI player, batting mostly in the middle-order. His most famous batting show, however, came as an opener, at Canterbury in 2000, when his 83 was instrumental in Zimbabwe’s win over West Indies. The previous year he had wrecked the Sri Lankan middle-order with 3 for 37, and scored an unbeaten 37 to steer Zimbabwe home.

Whittall played three consecutive World Cups, from 1996 to 2003. Zimbabwe qualified for the Super Sixes in the last two of these. He quit cricket immediately after the 2003 World Cup to focus on his family ranch.

He made news in 2013 when he woke up in the morning to find an enormous crocodile under his (low) bed at Humani Lodge: it was apparently there all night.

His cousin Andy also played international cricket.
