Brendon McCullum: New Zealand's first triple centurion
Even if he had done nothing else, Hanif Mohammad, the original Little Master, would have remained a part of cricket folklore for his 337 at Kensington Oval. West Indies had amassed 579 and bowled out Pakistan for 106 with over three-and-a-half days left. There was only one way out, and Hanif obliged: he batted for 970 minutes (999, by his own claim), still a world record.
During the innings captain Abdul Hafeez Kardar sent him multiple notes, each one carrying the same five words: “You are our only hope”.
However, that innings took its toll, and Hanif was never the same batsman after withstanding a ferocious bouncer barrage from Roy Gilchrist.
But there was more. For decades, Hanif’s 499 was the highest First-Class score. It was because of a scoring error that he had to risk a run and get out in the process.
Hanif was, without a doubt, Pakistan’s first world-class batsman. Many still consider him the greatest Pakistan opener, ahead of Majid Khan and Saeed Anwar. He played Pakistan’s first Test. His 3,915 runs from 55 Tests came at 44. When he retired, no Pakistani had played even 40 Tests.
He scored at least 2 hundreds against every country he played, and a hundred in every country he batted. When captaincy came his way he rose in stature, his 881 runs coming at 59. In First-Class cricket he amassed over 17,000 runs at 52 with 55 hundreds.
He could also keep wickets. In fact, on his debut series in India, he played 3 out of 5 Tests as a specialist wicketkeeper. And in an era when Pakistan cricket was dominated by the elite, he was the biggest representative of the middle-class.
Hanif was the third son of Ameer Bee, a badminton champion in undivided India. Hanif’s elder brother Wazir played Test cricket, as did younger brothers Mushtaq and Sadiq, while Raees, the eldest, was 12th man in the first Test on Pakistan soil. Hanif’s son Shoaib has played Test cricket as well, while Shoaib’s son Shehzar keeps wickets.
